CASE STUDY: Launching a State’s Cultural Tourism Plan to the International Spotlight

Case Study, Marketing, Native American, Public Relations
New Mexico Tribal Land_Red Mesa panoramic_1680PR

SITUATION

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson commissioned the New Mexico Tourism Department to launch the first statewide ecotourism initiative in America designed to develop new and sustainable business and economic opportunities to communities throughout the state.

CHALLENGE

Being first to market isn’t always easy—especially when the entire world is looking. 1680PR’s brain trust was personally tapped by the State Governor and Tourism Department for our particular expertise in fine arts and culture; authority and experience with all 23 Indian tribes, pueblos, and nations; and visionary business development acumen to move the project forward efficiently and within budget, interfacing with multiple state-level agencies and private-sector interests.

APPROACH

1680PR’s senior leadership provided specialized consultation to the Cabinet Secretary and Deputy Secretary of New Mexico’s Tourism Department regarding all Native American lands and revenue-generating interests. We bridged strategic relationships with key political / community influencer targets, while personally representing Governor Richardson’s agenda and the Tourism Department’s efforts at the international marketplace level in China. 1680PR’s visionary ideation and participation paved the runway for what has become America’s leading state tourism model.
